The Plant ThymeFormally called Thymus vulgaris it is in the Lamiaceae (mint) family. The garden variety is cultivated from wild thyme called Thymus serpyllum from the mountains of Spain and European countries bordering the Mediterranean. It eventually flourished in Asia Minor, Algeria and Tunis. It should be noted that the wild thyme has boarder leaves which margins are not reflexed as is garden thyme. Garden thyme is now been cultivated and grows in all temperate climates of the earth. As a general tonic it can be taken as a tea or concentrate to ward off anything going around. It is a powerful antiseptic, antispasmodic and carminative. It has been suggested to be used for sore throats, coughing and hooping cough. Some herbalists suggest that it can cure sciatica as well as pains in the head.
